As CircEsteem celebrates its 12^th year as Chicago’s largest youth circus, we’ve had the honor of working with thousands of kids from all around Chicago, in addition to many refugee youth who are new to the United States. CircEsteem’s mission of uniting youth from diverse racial, cultural, and economic backgrounds and helping them build self-esteem and mutual respect through the practice of circus arts is the guiding force behind this show.

CircEsteem’s CircEAU is directed by Orlene and Carlo Gentile, CircEsteem’s Artistic Directors. Together, Orlene & Carlo have been teaching and directing circus programs for the past fifteen years.

CircEsteem’s CircEAU promises to excite and delight audiences of all ages and is the perfect affordable outing for those seeking a fun springtime activity for families, schools, groups and friends. Proceeds benefit CircEsteem’s free afterschool tutoring program HomeWork & CircusWork.

Carlo Gentile, has been teaching circus arts to children and adults since 1994. Before starting to teach, Carlo performed with the Royal Lichtenstein Circus as a clown, juggler, unicyclist and diabolo artist. Carlo is a charter member of the American Youth Circus Organization.

Singing and dancing since age 3, Orlene Gentile started her work as an educator by teaching Filipino folk dance in 1990. She cut her teeth as a variety entertainer on the streets of India, Vietnam and the back woods of Thailand. She has taught circus, gymnastics and dance since 1999. She is a Past-President and Festival Co-Director of the American Youth Circus Organization.

Together, Orlene & Carlo have been teaching and directing circus programs for the past thirteen years. In 2002, Carlo and Orlene founded Fool Time Circus, an ensemble of teachers/performing artists dedicated to building confidence and expanding life choices through recreational circus arts. Then, in 2005 they co-created 888 Monkeys, a performing arts camp that has been running strong for 8 years in San José, CA.

Both are graduates of Santa Clara University and the San Francisco Circus Center’s Clown Conservatory. But, it took multiple trips to China for the perfection of their signature foot juggling number. Since creating that act, they’ve toured the USA coast to coast on the Zoppé Family Circus multiple seasons, Switzerland’s Circus Monti in 2007, and, most recently, Krystallpalast Varieté.

Description: Summer Circus Camp  is a fun, safe, supportive and challenging environment where children explore the many skills that create the Circus Arts. Circus Day Camp allows each child to develop self-confidence, self-esteem, physical awareness and an understanding of the potential they possess.

Skills taught may include: trapeze, acrobatics, clowning, juggling, stilt walking, gym wheel, rolling globe, tight wire, rolla bolla, aerial arts.

Students enrolled will get to share their excitement and skill with family and friends at the end of the week in a show!

Payment: CircEsteem’s 2013 Summer Camp costs $300 for the one-week session. A non-refundable  $100 deposit is required at the time of registration. The balance is due before the first day of camp. Children with outstanding payments will not be allowed to participate at camp.

Before & After Care: Before care is offered at 8:30am, the cost is $10. After care is offered until 5:00pm, the cost is $20.

Lunch: Campers must bring their own lunches. A refrigerator and microwave are available. Children should also bring a beverage. Bringing a bottle of water is highly recommended, as the daily activities are physically demanding.

Attire and personal belongings: Campers should wear clothing that is easy to move in and appropriate for being upside down. Gym shoes and socks are necessary for some circus activities. Wear or bring both every day. Jewelry is not allowed because it can easily get lost, damaged, or cause injury when snagged and pulled off the body inadvertently. CircEsteem is not responsible for any lost or stolen belongings. It is recommended that valuables be left at home.
