Pre-requisite: None

This class will focus on static trapeze and hanging fabric (silk). Building strength, coordination, and a basic aerialist vocabulary are its goals.

Maribeth joined CircEsteem in 2004 for its 4th Spring Circus as a stage manager, photographer and costume maker. She toured North and South America doing wardrobe and make up for Blue Man Group and has worked as a costumer and photographer with the Hawaiian Islands Community Circus Unity Project. She has led CircEsteem on tours all over the country and the world from Wisconsin to California to Germany. In 2009 she took 15 kids on a tour of the Midwest. She also represented the U.S. as National Judge for the International Gym Wheel World Championships in Switzerland. She is a Board member and Treasurer of the American Youth Circus Organization and has worn many hats in this circus from volunteer, tutor, mentor, friend, tour manager, stage manager, Managing Director, Program Director, and currently Executive Director.

Rachel Grandi – Programs Director

Rachel joined CircEsteem in 2009 as an intern and spent six weeks learning why CircEsteem is so great, and how to juggle. She now works as the liaison to the many sites where CircEsteem offers circus programming. Originally from Maryland, Rachel rode an elephant when she was eight and decided right then, she should join the circus. She graduated from Hunter College in New York City with a degree in creative writing before moving to Chicago. When she’s not running around helping Maribeth, Rachel can be seen performing in improvisational kids shows around the city.

Before & After Care are available.

Ages: 7 & up.

Levels: Beginner students who are trying circus for the first time; AND, Intermediate to Advanced students wanting to work on skills.

Description:Summer Circus Camp is a fun, safe, supportive and challenging environment where children explore the many skills that create the Circus Arts. Circus Day Camp allows each child to develop self-confidence, self-esteem, physical awareness and an understanding of the potential they possess.

Skills taught may include: trapeze, acrobatics, clowning, juggling, stilt walking, gym wheel, rolling globe, tight wire, rolla bolla, aerial arts.

Students enrolled will get to share their excitement and skill with family and friends at the end of the week in a show!

Payment: CircEsteem’s 2012 Summer Camp costs $260 for the one-week session. A non refundable 50% deposit is required at the time of registration. The balance is due before the first day of camp. Children with outstanding payments will not be allowed to participate at camp. We accept cash and personal checks only. Please make checks payable to CircEsteem, Inc.

Before & After Care: Before care is offered at 8:30am, the cost is $10. After care is offered until 5:00pm, the cost is $20.

Lunch: Campers must bring their own lunches. A refrigerator and microwave are available. Children should also bring a beverage. Bringing a bottle of water is highly recommended, as the daily activities are physically demanding.

Attire and personal belongings: Campers should wear clothing that is easy to move in and appropriate for being upside down. Gym shoes and socks are necessary for some circus activities. Wear or bring both every day. Jewelry is not allowed because it can easily get lost, damaged, or cause injury when snagged and pulled off the body inadvertently. CircEsteem is not responsible for any lost or stolen belongings. It is recommended that valuables be left at home.

Kerry Sheehan-Board Memeber

Kerry Sheehan is an arts-based education veteran with more than sixteen years experience in all aspects of management and program development. Prior to Second City, Kerry was the Director of Educational Programs for the Old Town School of Folk Music where she played an instrumental role in the school’s growth. She directed all of the school’s education programs and education outreach activities, and managed the school’s 250-person faculty, the education management staff, and the activities of more than 6500 students. Prior to the Old Town School of Folk Music, Kerry worked at WTTW/Channel 11 as the Associate Producer/Talent Coordinator for Center Stage, and served as the Educational Advisor for the children’s television program Jack’s Big Music Show (currently airing on Nickelodeon). She currently serves on the board of directors for the Illinois Theatre Association representing the professional theater division. Kerry is also a recording artist and performer in piano and accordion, and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Theory and Composition from the University of Kansas in Lawrence.

Eric Emert – Technical Director

Eric side-stepped into the circus world in the early days of CircEsteem. He started in 2001 with little more then a background in Fine Arts and some juggling skills. Now he can happily add walking on the rolling glob, poi, juggling, and teaching. Eric has almost as much fun learning these new skills as he does teaching them to the greatest kids in Chicago. After traveling with CircEsteem to the AYCO festivals in 2003 and seeing all of the circus props he came back inspired to build props for CircEsteem. Eric is responsible for building many of our props including tight wires, trapezes, rola bolas, stilts, and just about anything else made of metal. He is our go to man when something needs fixed and is in charge of making sure that all of the props at CircEsteem stay in tip-top shape.

Unicycle

Unicycle Beginner – SAT: 9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. $160 per session – ONLY TWO SPOTS LEFT IN THIS CLASS
Pre-requisite: None. Closed-toe shoes.
Learn to unicycle! The Free Mount, straight line, turns and idling are all possibilities for beginners.
Instructors: Colvin Creveling, Sam Sake

Unicycle – Beyond Beginner – SAT: 8:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m. $160 per session
Pre-requisite: Ability to ride unassisted and Instructor Permission. Closed-toe shoes.
**NEW** While Beginner Unicycle focuses on the fundamentals, the Beyond Beginner class will focus on mounts, hops, and idling. Trick mounts, acrobatic riding, one pedal and no pedal tricks will be introduced to more advanced riders. If you can ride across the Youth Center without a spotter, this class is for you.
Instructor: Sam Sake
