Our Fall session of Saturday Circus Classes runs from September 17 – December 17.  Below you will find the description of classes that are offered each session in our space at Alternatives (4730 N. Sheridan Rd) on Saturday mornings from 8:00 AM until 1:00 PM. Classes cost $294/session, with multiple class discounts available. Please note that CircEsteem has a no-refund policy.  If you need to drop a class, you may transfer to another class that has openings, or have your payment added as a credit to your account, which can be used for future classes, camps, parties, and more!

CircusTots (Ages 3-5)

Pre-requisite: None; Appropriate Age: 3-5 years old 

This is a transition class. Circus Tots is designed for children (3-4yo) moving into longer, more structured class environments and away from parent-child classes. This class focuses on the basic principles of circus: balance, coordination and clowning. Curriculum rotates. Possible skills introduced include: wire walking, plate spinning, feather balancing, tumbling.

A wonderful way to give children an early advantage: help your child increase his or her motor skills while having fun at the same time and reinforcing good classroom behavior!  Classes feature entertaining games that teach focus and strength while incorporating basic circus skills that work to improve coordination and balance.

Tiny on Trapeze (Ages 4-7)

Pre-requisite: None; Appropriate Age: 4-7 years old 

This class will mostly focus on static trapeze, but other aerial apparatus (fabric, rope, web, or hoop) may also be used to build strength, coordination, and a basic aerialist vocabulary.

Circus Buffet Minis (Ages 5-7)

Pre-requisite: None. 

This is a transition class. Circus Buffet Minis is designed for children (5-7yo) moving into longer, more structured class environments and away from parent-child classes. Like its “big brother” Circus Buffet, this class focuses on the basic principles of circus: balance, coordination and clowning. Curriculum rotates. Possible skills introduced include: wire walking, plate spinning, feather balancing, tumbling.

Diabolo (Ages 8-16)

Pre-requisite: none. 

This class will introduce beginner to intermediate diabolo skills. Students set and accomplish personal goals no matter what their level. Using good technique will be stressed.  

Mini-Trampoline & Tumbling (Ages 7-12)

Pre-requisite: Beginning Tumbling & Acrobatics or Instructor Permission. Please wear socks.

This class will combine mini-trampoline with floor tumbling to create spatial awareness and control in flight and landing.

Lyra/Aerial Hoop Level 2 (Ages 8-18)

Pre-requisites: Intro to Aerial Arts, Trapeze Level 1, or Instructor Permission. 

The Lyra or Aerial Hoop Class builds on the foundational skills and aerialist vocabulary introduced in Intro to Aerial Arts Class with complimentary aerial equipment. As with all other Aerial Arts, flexibility, grace and full body strength will be emphasized.

Trapeze Level 1 (Ages 7-18)

Pre-requisite: Intro to Aerial Arts or Instructor Permission. 
This class will focus on static trapeze. Building strength, coordination, and a basic aerialist vocabulary are its goals

Trapeze Level 2 (Ages 7-18)

Pre-requisite: Trapeze Level 1 Skill Competency and/or Instructor Permission. 
Building on the skills introduced in Trapeze Level 1, students in this class will focus on more difficult trapeze tricks, flexibility and grace along with full body strength.

Silks Level 1/2 (Ages 8-18)

Pre-requisite: None
This class will focus on hanging fabric (a.k.a., silk or tissu). Building strength, coordination, and a basic aerialist vocabulary are its goals.

Silks Level 2 (Ages 8-18)

Pre-requisite: Aerial Arts Level 1 Skill Competency and Instructor Permission. Building on the skills introduced in Aerial Arts Level 1, students in this class will focus on more difficult fabric tricks, flexibility and grace along with full body strength.

Acrobatic Chinese Pole 1/2 (Ages 7-12)

Skills Needed: Fearlessness; Tendency to climb everything in sight. Do you have a monkey masquerading as a child?  Give that monkey a safe place to climb. Here, they’ll learn the basic climbs and static holds for Chinese pole.  This class is open to those with little-to-no experience as well as those who have done some Pole climbing.  We will build a vertical movement vocabulary and expand much of our focus will be on building strength, coordination and endurance.  The kids who enjoy this class most are those already comfortable supporting their own body weight. Thin-soled shoes highly-recommended. 

Circus Buffet (Ages 8-14)

Pre-requisite: None. New Students should start with Circus Buffet class which focus on the basic disciplines of circus: tumbling/acrobatics, balance, juggling, and clowning. Circus Buffet curriculum rotates throughout the year. Circus Buffet (as opposed to Minis) is for older kids 8-13 who may or may not have been to a week or two of circus camp and are curious to find out about the exciting world of circus.

Clowning & Physical Comedy (TEAM Students only)

Pre-requisite: Generosity. Openness. Imagination. Through play we will discover what it is to be onstage and in performance! We will learn to embrace our inner silliness as we explore, and celebrate, our impulses: following, giving, receiving, and committing. In addition, we will begin to develop your own personal clown character and how he or she lives, and plays, in a world with other clowns! This class is intended for all members of TEAM the performance troupe.

Rola Bola, Tight Wire, Stilts and Globe (Ages 9-18)

Pre-requisite: Circus Buffet or Instructor Permission Stilt-walking has been part of legends, rituals and festivals from around the world for millennia, especially in celebrations of growth and achievement. Young and old alike gravitate to a stilted character towering above the crowd. That could be you! We will also balance on walking globes, tightwire, and balance boards

Gym Wheel (Ages 9-18 OR Must be 4’5″ or Taller)

Pre-requisite: Must be 4’5″ or taller12:00 PM – 12:55 PM. Hailed as one of the best workouts in Chicago, CircEsteem’s Gym Wheel Class is an opportunity to learn the basics of gym wheel. Gym Wheel is a fun and energizing core workout for people of all levels of fitness. Beginners welcome! 

Tumbling & Trampoline (Ages 9-18)

Pre-Requisites: Basic Tumbling, or Instructor Permission.

This tumbling class is open to students who can do a forward roll and cartwheel.12:00 PM – 12:55 PM. Using games and play, we will develop awareness and familiarity with body positions essential for flight (tuck, pike, straddle, arch, hollow, etc.). In addition, we will work on headstands and other foundation work for handstands.

Partner Acrobatics (Ages 9-18)

This is a beginner level class for students interested in learning the basics of counter balance, two highs, building human pyramids, and working together.

 This class is perfect for the first time and returning students.

Gym Wheel 3 (Ages 9-18)

Pre-requisite:Must be 4’5″ or taller, Gym Wheel 1 & 2, at least 3 belt tricks without a direct spot, a full rotation of two-seater without a direct spot, or Instructor Permission.

Hailed as one of the best workouts in Chicago, CircEsteem’s Gym Wheel Class is an opportunity to learn the basics of gym wheel.

Clown & Character (Ages 9-18)

Pre-requisite:Generosity. Openness. Imagination. 

Through play we will discover what it is to be onstage and in performance! We will learn to embrace our inner silliness as we explore, and celebrate, our impulses: following, giving, receiving, and committing. In addition, we will begin to develop your own personal clown character and how he or she lives, and plays, in a world with other clowns! This class is useful for aerialists, acrobats, jugglers, musicians and comics alike.

Advanced Partner Acrobatics (Ages 8-18)

Pre-requisites:Partner Acrobatics 1, wo-high without direct spot (standing on base’s shoulders), Thigh-stand unassisted (standing on base’s thighs), Headstand unassisted

Expand on skills from Partner Acrobatics and increase balance, strength and ability to work as a team.

Acrobatic Chinese Pole Level 1 (Ages 7-12)

Pre-Requisites: Pole 1, Climb to top and down twice

Continue to build upon vertical movement vocabulary from Pole 1 and build strength, coordination and endurance with more advanced work on Chinese Pole.

Lyra/Aerial Hoop 3 (Ages 9-18)

Pre-Requisites: Intro to Aerial Arts, Trapeze Level 1, at least 1 session of Lyra 1 & 2, Full split, and/or instructor permission

Build advanced aerial skills; flexibility, grace and full body strength will be emphasized.

Trapeze Partnering (Ages 7-18)

Pre-requisite: Trapeze Level 1 & 2 Skill Competency, Invert on ropes and pullover on bar, and/or Instructor Permission

Building on the skills introduced in Trapeze Level 1 & 2, students in this class will focus on more difficult trapeze tricks, flexibility and grace along with full body strength.

Silks Level 3 (Ages 8-18)

Pre-requisite: Silks Level 1 & 2 Skill Competency, at least one drop, and Instructor Permission   

Building on the skills introduced in Silks Level 1 and 2, students in this class will focus on more difficult fabric tricks, flexibility and grace along with full body strength.

Trapeze Level 3 (Ages 7-18)

Pre-requisite: Trapeze Level 1 & 2 Skill Competency, Invert on ropes and pullover on bar, and/or Instructor Permission

Building on the skills introduced in Trapeze Level 1 & 2, students in this class will focus on more difficult trapeze tricks, flexibility and grace along with full body strength.

 Please note no refunds are offered.  You may transfer to another class if there is space available.  If you need to drop a class, CircEsteem will credit your account.  That credit can be used for future classes, camps, and parties with CircEsteem!
