When Kim graduated from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 2017 with a degree in clinical psychology, she knew she wanted to work with children.
For five years, she did just that, serving as an ABA therapist and providing behavioral and social support to children on the autism spectrum. Her work was rooted in patience, compassion, and a deep understanding of how young people build confidence, develop social skills, and learn to navigate the world around them.
A Chicago native and the daughter of Mexican and Central American immigrants, Kim has always been passionate about creating safe, supportive spaces where children of all backgrounds and abilities feel seen, valued, and empowered. Over the years, she has worked with youth across a wide range of ages, experiences, and needs, helping them develop the social and behavioral skills that allow them to show up more confidently in their lives.
Kim discovered circus in an unexpected way, through an aerial conditioning class. What began as curiosity quickly became a passion. She fell in love with trapeze, lyra, and hand balancing, not only for the artistry, but for the focus, perseverance, and trust each discipline requires.

Today at CircEsteem, Kim brings these two worlds together.
In every class she teaches, Kim blends her background in therapy with the transformative power of circus arts. She meets students where they are, supports their social emotional growth, and helps them take brave steps, sometimes literally, toward new challenges.
You can see it in the small moments. A student who was once hesitant climbs higher than they ever thought possible. A young person who struggled with self doubt learns to trust their body and their abilities. A child who was shy begins to take up space, on the mat, in the air, and in their own life.
This is the impact of CircEsteem.
Circus is not just about performance. It is about resilience. It is about belonging. It is about surrounding young people with caring adults who believe in them, and giving them the tools and confidence to believe in themselves.
Kim’s story is one example of how CircEsteem’s dedicated staff bring our mission to life every day. And it is made possible because of a community of supporters who ensure our programs remain accessible, consistent, and welcoming for youth across Chicago.
